At DSG, we know how important it is to recognise young talent, which is why in June, we were delighted that one of our apprentices was honoured with an Apprentice of the Year award from social mobility charity Leadership Through Sport & Business (LTSB).
James Pimblett, 21, has worked in our small business team since February 2019 and has shown fantastic leadership.
“LTSB first got in touch with me after they visited my high school for a presentation. In fact, I missed it, but one of my teachers recommended me to them. After going through the university application process, I began really thinking about my options, and realised that I was keen to get straight into work. At the last minute I changed my mind, and chose to take the apprenticeship route offered by LTSB.
“The Business and Finance course offered by LTSB is intense. You start with a Bootcamp which covers employability skills and lessons on accountancy, then you spend one day being speed-interviewed by lots of different firms. DSG picked me out and invited me back for a second interview. I was struck by the friendly and kind team, and it immediately felt like a place where I’d love to work and would be able to progress.
“I joined the Small Business team as an accounts advisor in February 2019, and though it was really daunting at first, I settled in quickly. The team are always happy to help, and no question felt too big or too small. During my time at DSG, I’ve progressed so much, taking on a lot more responsibility and really embedding myself in the team.
“Receiving the Apprentice of the Year award came as a complete surprise. I had no idea it was coming and it made my graduation celebration very special! I’m so grateful to my managers, Dave Williams and Jane Stewart, for putting me forward and helping me progress while I’ve been at DSG. It’s also thanks to LTSB (and the teacher who recommended me) for giving me the push to go for the apprenticeship route, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone out there looking for a different path than university.”
